Detoxing should be avoided during pregnancy.
Pregnant or not, detoxes often tend to be more trendy than they are beneficial. This is because our bodies can detoxify themselves when left to their own devices. When we consume something in excess, our circulatory systems and organs will generally filter them out for us, so long as you don’t have any health conditions that may impair this process. To make sure that this system runs as it should, it’s important to stay on top of your fluid intake, as water helps to keep things moving.
The term “detox” is also relatively broad—there are numerous “detoxes" and “cleanses" out there, all claiming to offer slightly different benefits. But what they all tend to have in common is restriction, at least to some extent, and pregnancy is not an ideal time to be deprived of anything you and your baby might need.
The other thing to watch out for with some of these programs is the use of herbal supplements. There isn’t very much research on them to begin with, let alone during pregnancy, so exercise extra caution with these types of products and talk with your doctor before taking any supplements.
