Getting pregnant while breastfeeding is possible. Breastfeeding can have an effect on fertility1 , but it's not a foolproof method of birth control. While exclusive breastfeeding can delay the return of your menstrual cycle (a phenomenon known as lactational amenorrhea), it's still possible to get pregnant even if your periods haven't resumed. This is because you'll usually ovulate before you start your first postpartum period.

The key word here is “exclusive.” Once your baby starts sleeping longer stretches at night, begins solids, uses a pacifier, takes a bottle or if you start supplementing with formula, the likelihood of ovulation (and, therefore, pregnancy) can increase.

So if you're not ready to expand your family just yet, it's a good idea to discuss birth control options with your healthcare provider.

Remember, every body is unique and responds differently, so it's important to do what feels right for you.
