Like most dental procedures, you can get a root canal at any point during your pregnancy. Imagine the pain you would have waiting until after delivery to get that done, not to mention the infection that could occur, putting your pregnancy at risk of early delivery. It’s important to take care of your teeth during pregnancy1 and to not delay necessary dental treatments. If you’re early in pregnancy and are very nauseous, it may be hard to have somebody working in your mouth for an extended period of time. In that situation, if the pain isn’t dire, you can wait until you’re feeling better or ask your obstetrical provider for anti-nausea medication. Also, remember that evaluation prior to a root canal will require dental x-rays, and this too is perfectly safe, as the amount of radiation is low. The dental practice will provide a lead apron to cover your belly.
