Yes, it's generally safe to use topical salicylic acid while breastfeeding. Salicylic acid, a common ingredient in many over-the-counter acne treatments, is typically considered safe during breastfeeding1  when used in small quantities on the skin.

Studies show that the amount of salicylic acid that absorbs through the skin into the bloodstream is minimal, posing little risk to a breastfeed infant.

However, it's important to use this medication carefully. Avoid applying it on large areas of skin, broken skin or skin with a rash. It's also important to avoid applying salicylic acid to areas of your body that might come in direct contact with your baby's skin or where the baby might ingest the medication, such as near the nipples.
