It's generally not recommended to engage in a strict detox diet while breastfeeding. These diets often consist of mostly fruits and vegetables, providing fewer calories than breastfeeding typically requires.

If you’re exclusively breastfeeding, the CDC recommends 1 consuming at least 2,000 calories per day to maintain adequate energy levels and milk supply. A severe caloric restriction, as seen in many detox diets, can potentially impact both your well-being and your milk production.

Moreover, rapid weight loss—such as losing 15 pounds in just 10 days—is not advisable while breastfeeding. It could lead to a drop in milk supply. Gradual weight loss, approximately one to two pounds per week 2 , is a safer approach while breastfeeding as it doesn’t typically affect milk composition or supply.

If your goal is to improve your diet or lose weight, consider a "whole foods" approach instead of a strict detox. This method emphasizes fruits, vegetables, healthy fats and proteins and unprocessed grains. Coupled with regular exercise like brisk walking, this approach can promote weight loss and enhance overall well-being. However, any significant changes to your diet or exercise regimen should always be discussed with your healthcare provider first.
